BJP’s second most senior leader, LK Advani ended his anti-graft road show of almost 40 days across the country here on Sunday by challenging the UPA Government to disclose names of persons with bank accounts abroad.
At the Ramlila grounds here, Advani while addressing a crowded rally of party workers and supporters, volunteered to have NDA MPs undertake an exercise of signing declarations in parliament during the winter session, denying that any of them held “illegal” bank accounts outside India. “I solemnly declare that I do not have bank account or asset, illegally held outside India,” said Advani appearing to refer to what could be the future content of the opposition’s public disclosure form. He said this in the presence of allies such as JD (U) leader and NDA convenor Sharad Yadav.
He said, once parliament convenes on November 22, the NDA MPs would make such declarations to Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar and Rajya Sabha chairperson Hamid Ansari.The BJP’s critics, surprised at Advani’s assertion, hoped the party thought through its latest strategy of having over 150 opposition coalition MPs voluntarily sign such an undertaking.
Party members, however, appeared upbeat telling reporters, “We are not corrupt and so we don’t need to fear.” A meeting to discuss the NDA’s agenda for the winter session is expected to be held at Advani’s residence here on Monday.
BJP president Nitin Gadkari reiterated his demand for apologies from the prime minister and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi for conspiracy cases being slapped on a few of his party members in the cash-for-vote scam.
