A Special Investigation Team (SIT) court on Thursday gave its verdict regarding the post Gujrat riots of 2002 in the Ode village massacre case and held a total of 23 individuals responsible for the act. The court announced life imprisonment for 18 of them whereas 5 were given jail sentences for 7 years each. All of the 23 individuals were charged with accusations of murder, criminal conspiracy, and attempted murder.

According to media information, the convicted criminals were accused of killing 23 Muslims including eight women and nine children in the Ode village in Anand in the post 2002 Gurjat riots. The victims were hiding in a house for shelter when the accused men put the entire house on fire killing innocent people.

The prosecutor of the case PN Parmer further explained that a total of 46 individuals were accused amongst which 23 were not proven guilty and released on the orders of the court. He also said that his team had demanded death sentence for the 18 convicted for criminal conspiracy, murder, and attempt to murder but the court allowed them some leniency and they were sentenced to life imprisonment only.

He had said, “It is a heinous case involving mass killings of women and children so the trial court should award capital punishment to the convicts.”
