The chairperson of Bersih 2.0 Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan made the announcement of the peaceful protest at the Dataran Merdeka on the 28th of April and stressed that the protest will be carried out in an extremely peaceful manner.
Speaking on the matter she also said that her team is now experienced in dealing with huge gathering of people after the successful rally of 9th July the last year where they managed a crowd of more than 30,000 individuals who were walking on the streets urging the government to ensure clean and fair elections. She said, “If anybody try to cause trouble, we will personally hand them over to the police. That is how firm we are on the matter.”
She said that she will also write officially to the management of the city within the capacity of the manager of Dataran Merdeka only to fulfill all formalities and ensure that the message is understood clearly. She also said that the government has previously allowed other parties to register their peaceful protests with even larger strength of people; therefore, it will not be difficult for them to get the permission.
She added after testifying for the inquiry conducted into the previous rally, “Dataran Merdeka belongs to the rakyat. Once the government has given its green light, DBKL (should) have no reason to stop us from using it.”
