President Benigno Aquino III made an announcement on Monday stating that he was considering the utilization of nuclear energy to solve the on-going Mindanao power shortage crisis and explained that it was only under consideration and that the final decision has yet not been made.

He expressed that he was only going to study the proposal of nuclear energy however taking the people in confidence he assured that his inclination will always be towards any other power source that can cater to the problem with less or no negative effects in the long term. He said studying the proposal brought forward does not mean it will be implemented right away. It is only one of the options and definitely the last one if it comes to his personal preference.

He said, “When you had the Japanese who had their tragedy in Fukushima, you have the Germans rethinking about utilizing nuclear energy, and when we look at how meticulous and studious they are in following all of the rules and regulations to ensure safety, and we are not as meticulous and studious… we really have to study the matter very, very well.”

He urged the critics to be open minded about options as it is the responsibility of the government to look into all possible options before making the decision.
