The University and Universities College Amendment (UUCA) Bill was passed in the parliament on Friday which empowered the students to take over posts within or outside their institutes’ campus in an organization or association of their choice.
The amendment replaced the sub-section 15(2)(c) which initially stated that students involved in politics during the course of their education cannot take up any positions in any other organization or association within the campus. The amendment was proposed and taken forward by Khairy Jamaluddin on ground that the law was allowing people to criticize the government for given time periods.
During the concluding remarks of the bill passed in the parliament today, the Minister of Higher Education Datuk Mohamed Khalid Nordin said that the amendment passed today was aimed at achieving a balance between the educational objective and political freedom of the students. He also responded to queries put forward by other members of the parliament over delusional vision of students from studies to other activities, he said that the matter was under consideration of the leadership of the country.
Speaking in response to the answer of Nordin, Datuk Osman added that the students now need to take this as an opportunity and take benefit from it other than getting caught up in making parties within educational institutes.
