The Defence Minister of India AK Antony has called the age row case of the Chief of Army Staff of India VK Singh an “unfortunate controversy” on Tuesday after the final verdict of the case was announced.
The army chief also commented that the matter could have been “avoided by everybody” other than taking it to the Supreme Court. After being questioned by the media over his comments on the verdict of the Supreme Court on his age controversy, Singh said, “I think it was something that could have been avoided.” Upon further questions fired at him saying if he was referring to himself as the one to have avoided this, he responded that I said, “Everybody”.
The Supreme Court had announced to remain steadfast with the decision of the government to not entertain the request of the army chief to change his date of birth in the official records from May 10, 1950 to 1951, which he claimed was his correct year of birth. Upon refusal from the government to do so, the chief of army staff had taken the matter to the Supreme Court demanding that the change in his year of birth must be made. SC had announced that Singh must withdraw his petition filed to the SC as the decision announced by the government will remain.
