The President Benigno Aquino spoke to the reporters in Jaro, Iloilo on Friday, June 01, 2012 saying he is not bound by anyone neither by law nor tradition to assign one of the Supreme Court justices as Chief Justice of Philippines.

“We share the same rights; therefore we should share the same responsibilities. Everyone needs equal treatment. Lady Justice is blindfolded,” reported Aquino

The President said that Corona should not be given a special treatment as it would not be fair to the former court interpreter Delsa Flores, who was fired on the charge of not reporting her SALNs in Davao City’s market in 1997.

Aquino said the practice of locking away the justices’ statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALNs) was an infringement of the legitimate prerequisite for government officials to publicly unveil their assets.

The President Aquino was relieved when the Supreme Court agreed and ordered the employees, officials and judges of the judiciary to release their SALNs to the public on Wednesday.

The JBC sits on Monday to hunt for a new Chief Justice. The Court’s order should have increased the chances of the senior justice, Antonio Carpio on the Supreme Court of being named Chief Justice. However, President Aquino preferred to wait for the inspection to be completed.
