Ram Singh, the main suspect in Delhi-gang rape case, committed suicide by hanging himself while in police custody. Allegedly, Singh was the brains behind the fatal gang-rape of a 23-year-old paramedical student on a moving bus in New Delhi. The inhuman incident caused hues and cries around the world while raising several questions about the security of women in India.

According to the police department, Ram Singh hanged himself at 5:15 am on Monday. His death was confirmed by senior prison officers on duty in Delhi’s Tihar Jail. Singh’s body was immediately transferred to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital where he was officially declared dead. His brother Mukesh, who is a co-accused in the case, had been informed.

Singh’s lawyer VK Anand claims that his client was completely satisfied with how his trial in the gang-rape case was proceeding. He alleged that Singh had no reason to kill himself. Singh’s death will be investigated by a metropolitan magistrate.

On the other hand, the gang-rape victim’s mother was also shocked to hear the news. She said she might have found peace had the victim been humiliated with a public death.

“I just wanted justice for my daughter. The main accused is dead. Maybe the guilt killed him. He knew he was going to die anyway because we had and still have such a strong case against him. I’m not very thrilled with the news that he killed himself because I wanted him to be hanged publicly. Him dying on his own terms seems unfair. But, oh well, one is down. Hopefully the rest will wait for their death sentence,” she said.
