Parveen Rehman, a renowned social worker and Director of Slum Rehabilitation Project, Orangi Pilot Project, was shot dead on Wednesday. The tragic incident took place near Abdullah College, Karachi.

Parveen was on her way back from work when assailants chased her and opened fire within the precincts of Pirabad police station. Parveen was currently running the Orangi Pilot Project founded by Akhter Hamid Khan.

According to DIG Javaid Odho, the two armed men riding a motorbike opened fire at her near Abdullah College and successfully managed to flee from the scene. Parveen was immediately rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where she succumbed to injuries. Police is certain that it was a target killing incident as the gunmen specifically spared the driver.

The DIG alleged that the incident points towards the possible involvement of militants; however, detailed investigation would reveal the motive behind her murder. DR Mohammad Saleem told the media that Parveen had received at least four bullets.

50-year-old Parveen had left her profession as an architect to work for the development activities and joined Orangi Pilot Project. She was working with an NGO supporting people living in slum locality of Orangi Town. She was also heading a research centre in Orangi and taught students of Architecture College.

Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad declared it an inhuman act and urged the security forces to investigate the crime scene and extract all the footage from the cameras installed at all entry and exit points close to the crime scene. He also directed Sindh IG Ghulam Shabbir Shaikh to submit the report of the incident.
