A bus accident kills at least 37 and injured 14 after plunging off a bridge in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. Police states the bus fell into a dry river in Ratnagiri district, about 125 miles, south of Mumbai.

Reportedly, over 110,000 people die each year in road accidents in India, mainly caused by poor driving or poorly maintained infrastructure. According to the local police, more than 50 passengers boarded the bus that left Goa and headed towards Mumbai. Allegedly, the bus driver suddenly lost control which drifted the vehicle off the bridge.

“There were total 51 passengers travelling in the Mumbai-bound luxury bus. There is a possibility that the driver fell asleep. The process to identify the deceased passengers is on,” Nandkumar Thakur, additional superintendent of police said.

The incident took place at around 3.30 am on Tuesday. The bodies have been kept at Khed municipal hospital. Rescue operations are still on and the bus is being retrieved from the dry river.

“Three cranes were used along with gas cutters to rescue the injured who trapped in the wreckage. We are monitoring the health conditions of the injured. As per the advice of the doctors, the injured are been shifted to private hospitals or taken to Mumbai. The driver has survived the crash and his medical test has been done,” Rajiv Jadhav, Collector of Ratnagiri said.

On the other hand, media reports imply that some foreign tourists were also travelling on the bus; however, the police have denied affirming the claims. Earlier this month, over 11 children were killed in a school bus accident in the northern state of Punjab.
