Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma lashed out at his one-time party chief on Friday despite getting into trouble over recently passing controversial remarks against Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Verma has publically predicted that Samajwadi Party will not be able to win more than four seats in the upcoming polls. He also said that the Congress will win 40 seats in Uttar Pradesh.

“Congress will fight all the 80 Lok Sabha seats in UP and will win 40. We will not let BJP win more than 10 seats. Behenji (Mayawati) will win 36. And of whom you are talking about (SP) will win four seats and there will be a funeral procession for that party,” the Congress leader said.

Earlier, Verma got into trouble for claiming that Mulayam Singh Yadav has received commission for supporting the federal government. He also implied that Yadav was once associated with terrorists. Later, he had to apologize for his statements.

Flaying the Congress leader’s statement, SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said, “He has stooped down too low and is making baseless statements which are far from truth”.

Verma has also alleged that the “state government was distributing cheques of Rs 20 lakh to those involved in killing of DSP Zia-ul-Haq in Pratapgarh and history-sheeters”.

UP Congress leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi said: “The party doesn’t support such statements. Beni Prasad has his own views. We should know that elections are round the corner. The party should not be tagged to such statements.”
