The Food Security scheme will be officially launched on the birth anniversary of Late Rajiv Gandhi. Congress President Sonia Gandhi made the announcement after a party meeting on Saturday. Senior party leaders, Chief Ministers and PCC chiefs from all Congress-ruled states attended the meeting in New Delhi.

“Today Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, the PM decided to launch food security program from August 20. Over 82 crore people will benefit from this. Congress-ruled states will implement the food security scheme as soon as possible,” Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken said.

Congress is often accused of using the food security scheme as a game changer for 2014 Lok Sabha polls. On the contrary, experts believe that the scheme in discussion might be overrated as the infrastructure and ground realities will pose a serious challenge during its implementation stage. The BJP representatives are already criticizing the bill.

“The Food Security Ordinance has been brought in a rush. All the aspects have not been considered as to how the expenditure shall be borne between the Centre and the states. There is lot of other suggestions, which are required to improve it.

“Even the Parliament Session, we are told is going to be a very short one. We don’t hear anything about it. But the larger issue is people are suffering from inflation, from price rise, from falling rupee and a gross mismanagement of the Indian economy,” BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Saturday.
