Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has confirmed that he will meet Pakistani premier along with leaders of other neighboring countries during his stay in the United States. Singh is scheduled to meet U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington on Friday.

“We see the US as a long-term partner in our development efforts, and in fostering a global environment that is conducive to our growth. For India, the US remains a key source of technology, investment, innovation and resources, and one of the most important destinations for our goods and services,” Singh said before leaving for Washington.

Although, Pak-India relations have taking on a bumpy ride during the last few months, Singh indicates that he would meet Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after his address to the General Debate of the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

“During my visit to New York, I also look forward to bilateral meetings with the leaders of our neighboring countries, including Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan,” he added.

Singh has been facing resistance from opposition political parties, mostly the BJP, about having any talks with Pakistani leadership. BJP insists that Pakistan should take concrete steps to maintain peace at the Line of Control whereas Pakistan denies all allegations of killing Indian soldiers.

On the other hand, minister of New and Renewable Energy and chairperson of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, Farooq Abdullah hopes that the outcomes of Singh and Sharif’s meeting are in the best interest of both countries.

“I think his meeting with Nawaz Sharif is also important because we can change friends, we cannot change neighbors. We either live in friendship or live in disaster. It is a good step. I hope and pray to god that it is fruitful, that the meeting takes place and that something really emerges for the good of both nations,” said Abdullah.
