Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim once again failed today. Today he made his final appeal made to disqualify Lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah from leading the prosecution group in the prosecution’s appeal against his acquittal on a sodomy charge but the appeal got rejected. The five-member Federal Court panel chaired by the Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin dismissed Anwar’s second application made to disqualify Shafee.

Earlier outside the courtroom, Shafee informed the press that he had been a ‘close friend’ of Anwar’s since sixth form and so has no animosity towards the leader. ‘If you ask him whether I know him, at one point of time I was closest to him compared to Dr Mahathir, Abdullah and Najib Abdul Razak,’ said Shafee in reference to the former prime ministers Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, as well as the current prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Shafee added that he has not acted for Anwar as he knows a lot of secrets about the leader ‘which can be used in this case’. He further disclosed that this is the main reason Anwar wants him out of the case.

While this case may  completely jeopardise Anwar’s bid to win the future by-electionn Anwar Ibrahim not perturbed, ‘The opposition has gone through this for a long time — for the last 15 years, we’ve endured this. They have used the courts in the past, and we hope they will not in the future,’ said Anwar.
