The two suspended Kashmir students are ‘trapped’ in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut and are unable to move due to ‘fear and terror’ created by the local youth. The trapped students told over a phone conversation from Meerut that since the authorities of Swami Vivekanand Subharti University (SVSU) suspended and ‘threw’ them out from the campus, they are in ‘big trouble’. “We are trapped here in Meerat. We are two students at one place while other one is at another place,” Shahid, one of the students, said, adding: “Local Muslims gave us refuge and we are here from last four days. We aren’t able to eat due to fear.”

The ‘trapped’ students alleged that they are being hunted by the local youth. “They are searching for us. They want to kill us and we fear our lives,” he said. Expressing surprise, Shahid said the behavior of varsity authorities is ‘disappointing’. “The university suspended us and now they have filed case against us,” adding: “as if we had waged a war against India. We had never imagined that the issue will reach here.”

However, the Uttar Pradesh government dropped the case of sedition against these students after seeking legal opinion from the Law Ministry on the issue. Though charges of promoting enmity between the two groups continues to remain. “Very glad that the UP Police has withdrawn the sedition case against the boys. Grateful to Akhilesh Yadav for his intervention in the case,” tweeted Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Abdullah stated the incident as “unacceptably harsh punishment” and said it will ruin the future of the students and further alienate them. He had also spoken to UP chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to look into the issue.
