The Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi bench has dismissed the petition filed against Geo/Jang Group. Justice Sardar Tariq of LHC rejected the plea after hearing this Monday. Petitioner Syed Khalil had prayed to the court for closure of Geo News.
Similar petitions against the Jang/Geo group and Mir Khalil-ur-Rehman have been dismissed by the Sindh, Islamabad and Lahore high Courts already. Today, The Islamabad High Court (IHC) also dismissed an order to register a case against Jang/Geo group. The Justice of Peace Islamabad had issued an order to lodge an FIR against the Jang/Geo Group on a petition filed by citizen Arshad Mehmood Butt under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). Upon appearing at the Margalla Police Station on Sunday night, Arshad Mehmood Butt found that the police refused to lodge a case against the group, claiming that they had straight orders from the Prime Minister of Pakistan. After hearing this Butt appealed and shouted that he will set himself on fire if the police did not register the case.
On the other hand, Geo News claims that the petitioner is a fraud who has cases filed against him in Chakwal. According to this news coming only from Geo, the case against Arshad Butt was filed on 30 July 2005 on the orders of the Additional District and Sessions Judge under sections 468,420 and 471. According to details of the case, Arshad Butt had submitted a fake matric diploma for the union council nazim elections. Later this week Geo/Jang group had faced a boycott from members of Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf. The winner in this tug of war is yet to be decided.
