Several coaches of the Karakoram Express derailed in early hours of this Wednesday killing three people and injuring fifteen other people near Nawabshah’s Bandhi area, a local news channel reported.

The engine and several coaches took their way off the tracks as a result of the incident. The incident led to closure of the track and suspension of the railway traffic. The restoration of the railway track may take three to four hours, railway authorities claimed. The DCO railway Sukkur informed in the morning, that the train was traveling from Lahore to Karachi and the situation at that time was unclear as to what caused the incident. Police personnel and rescue teams immediately reached the site of the incident. Rescue workers shifted the injured to the nearest hospital called the People’s Medical College Hospital (PMCH).

The Minister of Railways Khawaja Saad Rafiq informed later in the morning that the Nawabshah train accident was not a terror activity but derailment of tracks which occurred while the tracks were being changed. He said the staff responsible behind this incident will be tracked down and strict action will be taken against the culprits. He also summoned a report about the accident and announced Rs0.5 million for the families of the victims while Rs0.1 million for the injured passengers. “The accident was not a terror activity but just a technical mistake caused the accident”, he stated today in a press conference after the accident.
