The controversial Uttar Pradesh gangster turned politician, Mukhtar Ansari was released this Saturday on custody parole from the Central Jail for a day to campaign for the coming Lok Sabha elections. Ansari was finally released after his wife Afshan paid a bond of Rs 1.27 lakh but later informed the media that her husband’s release was delayed for a later date even though the bond amount had been submitted.  Ansari was escorted by a large police force and was transported in an ambulance. Ansari’s Quami Ekta Dal is supporting the Congress in Varanasi this year and he is contesting from the Ghosi constituency.

The infamous politician had lost to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BNP) leader Murli Manohar Joshi by just 17,000 votes in Varanasi in 2009. After his release, he was taken straight to his constituency of Ghosi accompanied by his wife and other members of the family. Ansari is facing a trial in a case under stringent Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act for allegedly being a member of an organized crime syndicate. He was granted custody parole on May 1 for 10 days by a Delhi court for campaigning in Lok Sabha polls.

After campaigning ends today, Ansari would be sent back to either in a nearby jail or a police station for the night before being brought back to Agra Central Jail tomorrow. Earlier yesterday an intensive search was carried out in Ansari’s cell by the authorities after reports had informed that he was carrying out his election campaign from jail. However, after a six-hour search nothing objectionable was found according to the police.
