The federal government has decided to take an action against the three members of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) who conducted a meeting alone and made a decision to ban Geo News.
According to the sources, the government has issued show cause notices to PEMRA members Israr Abbasi, Mian Shams and Fareeha Ikhtiar. These officials had announced recently to suspend Geo’s three licenses after a meeting held this Tuesday. Announcing immediate suspension of their broadcasting licences, these members had issued directives to seal the offices of three Geo channels. A few hours later, the PEMRA spokesperson announced the meeting as illegal.
Whereas the Information Minister, Perveiz Rasheed, stressed the apology by the channel should be accepted and people should let the government deal with challenges like the threat of terrorism and energy crisis. He added that, “Issue is not of a closure of any channel but is of freedom of expression.” He was talking to the media reporters outside Hamid Mir’s house where he went to inquire about his health. To a question he answered that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) was an independent institution and would not be dictated by anyone.
