Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak this Monday, said in his speech at the 2014 National Press Club (NPC) Awards Nite that all Malaysians, which includes all politicians, all journalists and all citizens, to avoid inflammatory statements and try instead to ease the tensions rippling.

It was reported that a letter of demand which was delivered to the online portal on May 15, stated: “The compilation of readers’ comments in two ‘Yoursay’ articles published on May 14, namely ‘A case of the PM reaping what he sows’ and ‘How much will Najib spend to keep Terengganu?’, were defamatory.” “It is not part of any crackdown; it is not an attempt to silence critical voices,” said Najib while addressing the people at the awards night. “It is a matter of acting on specific accusations which cross the line from fair comment into slander. It is my legal team’s opinion that recent allegations by an online news portal overstepped the line. They have therefore issued a legal notice,” he said.

He said that the politicians should not try to seek headlines with cheap statements whereas the journalists should take the responsibility of reporting accurately. The readers should try to seek the truth before making judgments. “And people have a responsibility to think about the content they share in the heat of the moment,” said the Prime Minister. ” We should do so in the spirit of fairness and in the service of truth – the same principles which guide tonight’s winners and the members of the National Press Club,” expressed Najib. He further added that “Reflective and responsible reporting can act as a shock absorber, soaking up the impact of unguarded remarks…all of us will occasionally get the balance wrong. What matters is how we react, respond and move on”.
