The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) chief Vaiko has written to the new Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi asking and seeking his intervention in the case related to securing the release of a Jesuit priest who was abducted by the unidentified gunmen in Afghanistan on the 2nd of June and taken to Tamil Nadu.

In his letter to Mr. Modi, Vaiko has contended that the 47-year-old Fr Alexis Prem Kumar S J has been one of those people who have dedicated themselves for the uplift of the Tribal people and has also served for the Sri Lankan refugees in the region of Tamil Nadu.”I am afraid his life is in danger. I would request you to take appropriate immediate measures with the Government of Afghanistan to secure the release of the Catholic Priest,” Vaiko said. Vaiko’s friend was serving as the Country Director in Afghanistan for the Jesuit Refugee Service and was abducted this Monday was the province of Herat, almost eleven days after the Indian consulate was attacked by the armed men.

“His entire life as a Jesuit was happily spent in the service of Jesus for the ‘other’ especially the disadvantaged and those deprived of human dignity”. This is how Fr Victor Edwin SJ , a doctoral student of Christian Islam relations at the renowned Jamia Islamia University, New Delhi, described Fr. Alexis Prem Kumar SJ. There is still no clue about the priest.
