The Penang Syariah High Court this Thursday ruled that Teoh Cheng Cheng, 38, whose body was seized by the state Islamic religious officials this Monday, was not a Muslim but a Buddhist at the time of her death. Judge Zaim Md Yudin informed that the court arrived at this conclusion after finding that there were discrepancies in the dates of the conversion documents.

He said that the date in the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department log book, where details of converts were recorded, differed from the date in the conversion application forms. He also added that witnesses including Teoh’s boyfriend and daughter Medelyn Teoh, showed that the deceased performed her prayers according to the Buddhist rites. “The court finds that Teoh Cheng Cheng or Nora Teoh Abdullah is not a Muslim at the time of her death,” Zaim said in his ruling and ordered the body be returned to the family for the last rites to be performed.

The Tanjung MP also demanded stern action against the officers from the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jaipp) who snatched away the body when the grieving family was in the middle of their Taoist final rites. “Failing which, harsh action should be taken against the police officer involved while at the same time, the Jaipp officers concerned must also be transferred to take full responsibility over their miscarriage of justice,” he said in a statement.
