Cellular Blackout Imposed On Ashura

This Monday, as a security measure, cellular services have been switched off in the most sensitive cities of Pakistan as different processions and gatherings take place during the observance of Ashura. The Day of Ashura is observed on the tenth day of Muharram and is commemorated by Shi’a Muslims as a day when Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) met his death without the promised assistance of the Kufans at the Battle of Karbala.

In most of the cities of Pakistan, the services would remain suspended from 06:00 AM till 10:00 PM on the 3rd and 4th of November that is the 9th and 10th of Muharram-ul-Haram. The Sindh Home Department confirmed that there will be no cellular coverage in Karachi and Sukkur on both November the 3rd and 4th while Hyderabad will see a mobile blackout only on the 4th of November.

Samaa News further reported that Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Dera Ismail Khan, Kohat, Hangu, Lakki Marwat, Bannu and parts of Peshawar will not have mobile connectivity on both the eve and the day of Ashur. Mobile services will also be blocked around the routes of the Muharram processions in some cities. According to intelligence reports, there are great security threats in areas that include Chakwal, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Jhang, Narowal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Rawalpindi, Layyah, Rahim Yar Khan, Sargodha, Bhakkar, Gujranwala, Lahore, and Multan.
