Two adjacent factories in North Laverton caught fire around noon on Monday. Fire brigades and several rescue teams were called in to take the situation under control.

According to a number of eyewitnesses, the fire started off in one of the factories but spread so much in no time that the factory adjacent to it also caught fire and the entire industrial region was covered in black clouds. Fire brigades were called in at 12: 30pm for assistance. More than a hundred fire fighters with about two dozen fire brigade trucks arrived at the factories within a short while of reporting. It took the teams one and a half hour to bring the situation under control.

The reason behind the fire being initiated has not been declared yet. However, the fire fighting teams have now declared the situation “under control” and are working towards making sure no other part of the two factories catches fire.

The spokesperson of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) informed the media that there are no deaths or reported casualties as there were no workers inside the factories when fire broke out. She further said, “We’ve probably got about almost 100 fire fighters on scene. It’s a very, very large fire. It will be going for a while”.

Residents of the nearby housing schemes have been warned to stay inside their houses and keep the windows and doors of their houses closed so that the dangerous smoke from the fire does not affect them.
