Samantha Harris, an Australian covergirl has defended a magazine modeling competition that announced a 13-year-old girl as its winner. Dolly magazine chose Kirsty Thatcher as the winner of its national model search and thus faced controversy earlier this month. The prize offered to Thatcher included a cover-shoot with the magazine and a contract with the high-profile Chadwick Model Agency.

Harris, 21, also started her modeling career when she was only 13 after making it to the list of finalists in a similar model search competition run by Girlfriend magazine.

She said, ”I do think its fine as long as they’ve got good management and they’re considerate of how young the girl is,” ”When I started modeling I was 13 as well. It worked out well.” She has appeared on magazine covers including Vogue and Madison, and is currently the David Jones young women’s fashion ambassador.

She added, ”The agency did really well. They nurtured me. I still continued to do school. I finished school.” “They understood that I was so young and didn’t push me into anything too drastic.” She explained that the management understood that she was so young and after eight years on Australia’s catwalk she said her early start had worked out perfectly.
