U.K. Prime Minister, David CameronBritish Prime Minister David Cameron unveils the Conservative proposal of a £50m pilot scheme that will encourage to provide extended GPs surgeries open 12 hours a day, seven days a week.

Pilot projects are to be carried out in nine areas in England after a NHS survey showed that patients were concerned about inconvenient appointments.

In a recently conducted NHS survey, almost one in five patients have responded that inconvenient appointments were a concern, with more than 70 percent backing weekend and after office hours opening.

The new move aims to privilege patients with better services and reducing the pressure off Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments.

Approximately, half a million people will benefit from the trials.

Mr. Cameron has said: “Millions of people find it hard to get an appointment to see their GP at a time that fits in with their work and family life.

“We want to support GPs to modernise their services so they can see patients from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week.”

Mr. prime minister proposes for “greater flexibility” to allow patients to contact doctors telephonically, by email and even on Skype.

The chief inspector of primary care at the Care Quality Commission, the care services watchdog, Steve Field, has said that access to GPs is “patchy” and recommended that surgeries move to a seven-day practice, arguing that patients working full-time found it hard to make appointments.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt would deliver additional details about the scheme during his speech on Tuesday, the last day of the Conservative Party conference in Manchester.
