During the phone hacking trial, it has been emerged to jury at Old Bailey on Thursday that Rebekah Brooks had an affair with Andy Coulson “for at least six years” between 1998 to 2004.
The court hears that police have discovered a letter dated February 2004 in a computer at Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks’ London residence indicating the relationship.
Mr. Brooks and ex-spin doctor Andy Coulson were alleged to be a part of a phone-hacking scandal, along with two other defendants, at the defunct tabloid – News of the World – that intruded into the privacy of a dozen high-profile figures through hacking their voicemails.
Prosecutor Andrew Edis has told the court that the pair had been in relationship for quite few years when both were employed at the media giant, covering the span of their phone-hacking conspiracy charge.
Mr. Edis said: “The point that I’m going to make in relation to that letter is that over the relevant period, what Mr. Coulson knew, Mrs. Brooks knew too.
“And what Mrs. Brooks knew, Mr. Coulson knew too – that’s the point.
“Because it is clear from that letter that, as of February 2004, they had been having an affair which had lasted at least six years.”
Mr. Prosecutor has told the jurors that the letter – seemingly drafted by Ms. Brooks in response to Mr. Coulson trying to end the relationship – included a declaration of her love for her colleague, as a part of document said: “You are my very best friend… I confide in you. I love you… we laugh and cry together… I’m frightened to be without you.”
