Charlie BrooksThe Old bailey has heard during phone hacking trial on Monday that former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks’ husband, Charlie Brooks hid a computer and pornographic DVDs from police to avoid leaks to the press and embarrassment for his wife.

Mr Brooks has told the court he hid a bag of “explicit” DVDs along with a laptop behind the bins of an underground car park at the couple’s flat in Thames Quay, west London because he did not want a “Jacqui Smith moment” – referring to the Labour home secretary who became involved in a scandal after her husband submitted an expenses claim for watching adult movies.

Mr Brooks, who denies one charge of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, has told the court that when he got to know later that the hidden items behind the bins had been found by a cleaner and handed over to police, he eventually told his wife about the incidence.

Mr Brooks – the racehorse trainer and writer had told the court: “Ever since Operation Weeting (the phone hacking probe) had been at the buildings at News International, a lot of stuff had been leaked, particularly to the Guardian.

“A lot of stuff had been leaked and I was very aware of that.”

He has added: “Incredibly stupidly and rashly, I thought I would just put these to one side. They (police) wouldn’t take it away and I wouldn’t lose my material.”

Mr Brooks has also told his counsel Neil Saunders that the material on “DVDs are of an embarrassing nature” and he did not want it to leak to the press.

Mrs Brooks is currently also facing trial against allegations of attempting to pervert the course of justice by hindering the police investigation in addition to the conspiracy to hack phones and authorising illegal payments to public officials. She also denies all charges.
