Ann MaguireA 15-year-old boy accused of stabbing a high school teacher in Leeds to death, has been charged with murder.

Ann Maguire, 61, died of multiple stab wounds after she was attacked by a pupil at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Halton Moor on Monday.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Leeds Youth Court to face the trial.

The defendant, whose right arm was in plaster, was wearing a navy blue sweatshirt and tracksuit bottoms, was flanked by three security officers – two men and a woman.

The head of the complex casework unit at CPS Yorkshire and Humberside, Peter Mann has said: After interviewing the accused “under caution by police.”

And “Having carefully considered all of the evidence presented to us by West Yorkshire Police, we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence to charge this youth with the murder of Ann Maguire and that it is in the public interest to do so.”

During the hearing, District Judge Roy Anderson told the accused he will be remanded in youth detention and will appear at Leeds Crown Court tomorrow morning by video-link. He has also told the boy that no application for bail was allowed at this hearing.

Before the hearing, the Maguire family paid an emotional tribute to the Spanish teacher, in a statement released through West Yorkshire Police: “Our beautiful Ann, our shining light, she brightened the world for so many of us.

“A loving wife, the best mother, a treasured sister, a true friend. This horrific happening has robbed us of all of this and so much more. We are devastated. Her selfless, genuine, caring nature will remain with us eternally.

“Ann, we will love you always, your loving family.”

Mrs Maguire was only a few months away from retiring after working at Corpus Christi for more than 40 years before the tragic incident took place.

Mrs Maguire’s death is the first incident a teacher has been stabbed to death in a classroom in U.K., and the first murder of a teacher in school since the 1996 Dunblane massacre.
