Conservative MP Michael FabricantPrime Minister David Cameron has condemned a Tory MP’s suggestion in a tweet on Friday that he would punch a female columnist in the throat as “completely unacceptable and in poor taste”.

Michael Fabricant’s remarks came regarding high-profile left-wing journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown after she clashed with right-wing commentator Rod Liddle on a television news programme on Thursday.

The Tory MP for Lichfield had said in the tweet afterwards: “I could never appear on a discussion prog with @y_alibhai I would either end up with a brain haemorrhage or by punching her in the throat.”

Just a few minutes after the post, Mr Fabricant had received an angry barrage of tweets, with Gloria De Piero, the shadow minister for women and equalities, claiming the comments as “a disgusting thing to say” and asked him to apologise.

The Conservative MP later on did try to amend his words in next series of tweets, as he has written: “If anyone believes I would seriously threaten someone with violence, I of course withdraw and apologise.”

Mr Fabricant has also directed a partial apology to Alibhai-Brown by writing: “Sorry @y_alibhai if you actually thought I would punch you. I actually don’t do that sort of thing. But you are utterly infuriating! Xx”

He has also added: “So just for the avoidance of any doubt: I am v sorry for tweet. It was wrong to joke abt punching + I completely withdraw and apologise.”

On the other hands, the journalist has told he could “stuff” the apology, which was “actually making it worse”.

However, Mr Cameron while welcoming the attempted apology from Mr Fabricant has also told that the original tweet was “not an acceptable thing to say”.

He has also added: “Michael knows that that is my view and I don’t want to see this happen again”.
