All eight defendants involved in killing four members of Taufiq familyTwo men have been found guilty of murdering a mother and her three children in a revenge arson attack in Wood Hill, Leicester.

The mother – Shehnila Taufiq, 47, her 19-year-old daughter Zainab, and sons Bilal, 17, and Jamal, 15, all died when a fatal fire surrounded their house, in the early hours of September 13 last year.

At the time of attack, the father of three, Dr Muhammad Taufiq Al Sattar – a paediatric neurosurgeon – was working at a hospital in Dublin.

The suspects Kemo Porter, 19, and Tristan Richards, 22, were found guilty of the four killings at Nottingham Crown Court.

Six other defendants, Shaun Carter, 24, Nathaniel Mullings, 19, Jackson Powell, 20, Aaron Webb, 20, Akeem Jeffers, 21, and 17-year-old Cairo Parker all were cleared of four counts of murder but found guilty of manslaughter.

During the trial at Nottingham Crown Court, the prosecutor Richard Latham QC has told the fire was a “retribution process” for the fatal stabbing of defendant’s friend Antoin Akpom, 20 – a football coach, earlier that day and the killers intended to target the house of another man for revenge who they believed had stabbed their friend.

The fire was started when petrol was poured through the letterbox and then lit.

The remaining six defendants – all from Leicester, had told while giving evidence that Richards had poured the petrol and started the fire using a lighter given to them by Porter.

They all told of having no knowledge about any plans to set fire to the house and claimed of only having the intention to throw bricks at the property.

On the basis of trial and evidence, the jury had found them not guilty of murder.

All eight defendants will be sentenced on Wednesday.
