The former chief executive of News International Rebekah Brooks has told press on Thursday how she feels “vindicated” after being cleared of all charges in the final court verdicts delivered on phone-hacking trial.
The ex- editor of the News of the World, Brooks, 46, remained at the center of an eight-month trial into wrongdoing at two News Corp. tabloids, was acquitted on June 24 of all charges against her relating to phone hacking, bribery and perverting the course of justice. Her husband, Charlie Brooks was also cleared by the jury of obstructing justice on Tuesday.
Ms Brooks has told reporters outside her London home, alongside Mr Brooks: “The last few years have been tough for both of us.
“I am innocent of the crimes I have been charged with and I feel vindicated by the unanimous verdict.
When I was arrested it was in the middle of a maelstrom of controversy, of politics and comment – some of that was fair, but much of that was not, so I am grateful to the jury.”
Ms Brooks has also expressed her pride in her former colleague journalists who will face future trials as she has said: “All I can say to you is that today my thoughts are with my former colleagues and their families who face future trials. I’m going to do everything I can to support them as I know how anxious the times ahead are.”
Mr Brooks, who supported his wife nearly every day of the trial, has said they had maintained their innocence all along as he has stated: “Everything, absolutely everything we said two years ago has proved to be true.”
