In an announcement today, The Criminal Cases Review Commission has referred the rape conviction of the former Welsh international footballer, 26-year-old Ched Evans, to the Court of Appeal. He served half of his five-year sentence in prison and got released just last year. He was convicted of raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel in Rhyl, Wales, in April 2012.

Ched has maintained his innocence since day one. However, his bid to restart his career with Oldham Athletic and his former club has been highly critiqued by the public. On the other hand, his supporters have posted a statement on chedevans.com, i.e. a website publicising Evans’s innocence. According to the statement issued on the website, “Ched Evans, the former Manchester City, Sheffield United and Welsh International footballer was today informed that his application to the CCRC (Criminal Cases Review Commission) has been referred which brings closer Ched’s fight for justice and the overturning of his conviction for rape.”

The statement reads that “Ched and those who closely support him have always maintained that he was wrongly convicted and – using new information that was not presented at his trial – we expect that in time his conviction will be quashed.” It was added that “the decision to refer Ched’s case is welcomed by all who know the true facts and Ched would like to thank all those who have supported him since his conviction in April 2012 and his subsequent release from prison in October 2014.” Moreover, it is mentioned that “in particular the support he received from football fans from many clubs kept his spirits high in the most difficult of circumstances but in particular the support from the many Sheffield Utd fans who stayed in contact with him.”
