Sources have confirmed that the 44-year-old tourist and his niece were walking through the street when the attackers, a man and a woman, mugged them at around 8.30pm on Friday and stabbed the tourist in the head. The victim was shifted to the San Francisco General Hospital in critical condition soon after.

The incident prompted a serious response from former San Francisco Sheriff, Ross Mirkarimi, who demanded increased foot patrols in the city. He commented that “there needs to be more of a community policing presence throughout San Francisco. Tourists find every nook and cranny in the city.” Latest reports confirm that investigators are now using CCTV footage to identify the attackers as they urge witnesses to come forward and provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.

Whereas on the other hand, local policeman, Carlos Manfredi, explained that muggings in San Francisco “happen to everyone.” He stressed that it was not likely to be a targeted attack against a British tourist.
