police tasers former footballer dalian atkinson to deathWest Mercia police has confirmed that a 48-year-old man presumed to be former Aston Villa footballer, Dalian Atkinson, has died after officers Tasered him near his father’s home in Telford on Monday. Mr Atkinson was currently playing for Sheffield and Ipswich Town. He is believed to be in the area to visit his father.

The statement issued by the police revealed that the officers fired a Taser at about 1.30am on Monday in response to a report of concerns for a person’s safety. Soon after the incident, the man was given medical attention but he failed to survive and was pronounced dead 90 minutes later. The incident has been automatically taken up by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) because it involved the death of a man caused by police officers. The police confirmed in a statement that it will be assisting the IPCC with its investigation so it cannot comment further. The IPCC confirmed it had been notified of the incident and it would issue a statement soon.

Meadow Close remained closed on Monday as forensic officers could be scene collecting evidence from the scene. One of the neighbors, Matthew Bothwell, confirmed that the footballer visited his father’s place frequently in his Porsche. He stated that “every time he would come he would have crowds around him. It’s close-knit community. I just can’t bear to think what his family are going through,” adding that “he was loving, caring and got on with everybody in the street. He always got on with the kids because they absolutely loved his car.”
