According to Iranian opposition websites, the decision was made by presiding judge Mohammad Ali Roshani of the fourth branch of Kermanshah’s appeals court. On 30 January, the first branch of Kermanshah’s revolutionary court sentenced Ghasemi Kermanshahi to five years in prison on charges of “actions against national security through membership in the Kurdistan Human Rights Defence Organisation,” and “propagating against the regime through publication of news and reports, and interviews with the media,” as well as “contacting families of political prisoners and those executed.”
Following the court’s initial ruling, the activist’s attorney Mostafa Ahmadian vowed to appeal the court’s decision which he said was “too severe,” maintaining that none of his client’s activities constituted “action against national security” or “propagation against the regime.”
Kaveh Ghasemi Kermanshahi was arrested on 3 February 2010 in the western province of Kermanshah and endured four months of imprisoned before being released on a heavy bail of 1,000,000 Rial (around $97,000) on 23 May 2010.
During his detention, he was under pressure to confess to espionage and to participate in a televised interview. He spent the first eighty days of his detention in solitary confinement and was on a hunger strike during the last week of his imprisonment.
