Iranian authorities marked International Women’s Day on Tuesday, by once more bringing massive numbers of security forces onto the streets of the nation’s capital in an attempt to prevent any form of protest from taking place.

Youtube videos show police forces massing along the streets and at times, beating up protesters with batons in Tehran’s Pounak Square as well as in the north-western areas of the city. Eyewitness reports suggest a heavy security presence in Tajirsh Sq, Shariati Avenue, Vali-Asr Sq, Mohseni Sq and Mirdamad Avenue.

Iranian women’s rights activists had called on citizens to mark International Women’s Day by taking to the streets in support of women’s rights in the country, in particular Zahra Rahnavard and Fatemeh Karroubi, the wives of opposition figures Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi.
