A 19-year-old man has been charged in connection to a Saturday night stabbing death in Burnaby.

Yacine ZOUAOUI (pronounced Zow ee), 19, of Burnaby, has been charged with one count of second degree murder. ZOUAOUI was arrested approximately one hour after a fatal stabbing incident on Saturday evening in Burnaby.

ZOUAOUI was remanded on the weekend until Tuesday March 29, 2011 when he will appear in Vancouver court.

Background

A Saturday evening stabbing in the Metrotown area of Burnaby has resulted in one deceased adult male and one adult male in police custody.

On March 26, 2011 at approximately 7 PM, Burnaby RCMP received a report of a stabbing in the 6500 block of Burlington Avenue.

Once on scene Burnaby RCMP located a 43-year-old Burnaby man sitting outside of a condo building in serious condition as a result of the injury sustained in the stabbing. BC Ambulance Service attended the scene and proceeded to treat the male. The male was eventually transported to a local area trauma hospital where he passed away from his injuries.

At approximately 8 PM Vancouver Police received information regarding a possible suspect in the stabbing. Vancouver Police attended the location, identified and arrested a 19-year-old Burnaby male in connection to the stabbing. Vancouver police contacted Burnaby RCMP to advise and turn over the suspect.

The male was transported to Burnaby RCMP cells where he remains in custody for murder. He is expected to make a first appearance in Vancouver Court on Monday, March 28 to face a charge of murder.

At this point of the investigation, investigators have learned that the victim and suspect were known to each other. The motive for the murder will be evidence presented in court at trial and therefore is not being released at this time.

Police identified a secondary scene at the Metropolis Shopping Center. There was no apparent threat to the public as it appears this location is where potential evidence related to the stabbing was located. There was no altercation in relation to this incident at the shopping center.

The victim has been identified as 43-year-old Zsolt CSIKOS of Burnaby.
