In the early morning hours of Sunday May 15, 2011, the Ahousaht RCMP responded to a report of an injured male at his residence on the Ahousaht reserve. A male, identified as 45 year old Raymond SAMUEL of Ahousaht, B.C., was found to be suffering from life threatening injuries and was transported to Tofino Hospital for medical treatment. SAMUEL was later air lifted to Victoria General Hospital where he died on the evening of May 15, 2011.

Investigation by members of the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit, supported by the Ahousaht RCMP detachment, the Tofino RCMP detachment and the Port Alberni RCMP Forensic Identification Section, has confirmed that SAMUEL’s injuries were sustained during an altercation inside his residence a short time prior to police arrival.

Christopher Mathias SAM, a 21 year old resident of Ahousaht, was arrested a short time after police arrival. SAM appeared in court on Wednesday May 18, 2011 to face charges of Second Degree Murder, Aggravated Sexual Assault, and Assault. The Aggravated Sexual Assault and Assault charges relate to two separate victims who will not be identified. Sam has been remanded in custody pending his next court appearance.
