A Lake Cowichan RCMP officer is facing an assault charge relating to his interaction with a female driver he had detained in an impaired driving investigation on December 13th, 2010.

A criminal investigation was initiated after another RCMP member reported observing Cst. Kevan Cranmer using what he believed was excessive force. The female, who was not seriously injured, did not make a complaint. All circumstances surrounding the incident were forwarded to Crown Counsel for their review, and one count of assault was approved. Cst. Cranmer will be appearing in Duncan Provincial Court on July, 26, 2011 at 9:00 am.

Cst. Cranmer, a member with 2.5 years service, is currently on active duty in Lake Cowichan.

A separate internal Code of Conduct investigation into the incident is also continuing.
