Unifor Local 4268 has confirmed that school buses will continue working normally on Thursday and serve thousands of students after a tentative deal was reached between Unifor and the First Student bus company. According to the announcement made just before 6 a.m., the school bus strike was averted in result of a “difficult” night of bargaining and finally the agreement meant that all buses in Toronto and York Region would be running on their normal routes.

Addressing the media, Unifor spokesperson Debbie Montgomery explained that “drivers are working today, (are) looking forward to working today, and the bargaining committee has worked really hard.” The negotiation between the two parties started at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday and continued past the midnight deadline as “three binders” full of back-and-forth offers finally led to a breakthrough in the final hour with movement on wages. The three-year agreement was appreciated as “fair deal” by Montgomery and it was hoped that all “members would be pleased” about it. Furthermore, she revealed that the agreement stipulate that bus drivers would be compensated for their preparation time getting to their routes.

The deal is set to be ratified within a week and Montgomery claims that “there’s still more work to be done in the future.” She further added that “this is the first collective agreement, so we’re starting from scratch.” Toronto District School Board, Toronto Catholic District School Board, York Region District School Board and York Catholic District School Board confirm that buses will be operating their normal routes.
