NBC Twitter Account Hacked; Investigations Underway

The NBC Twitter account was reported to be hacked after a bogus news update was published. The news that had been tweeted was about an airplane that was hijacked and had crashed in to Ground Zero. FBI has assured that they are looking in to the group behind this cyber attack. The news was removed after a few minutes by NBC.

With a massive total of 130,000 followers, NBC had kept the password of the account limited to only three news executives. Anchor Brian Williams clearing the confusion caused by the false news tweet said that “working with Twitter to correct the situation” and he also apologized “for the scare that could have been caused by such a reckless and irresponsible act.”

The perpetrators are so far thought to belong to a new group of cyber pranksters who call themselves “The Swift Kiddies”, FBI stated. Their main objective is to target the major news channels of the country and embarras them by such postings. This was identified through the tweet posted minutes after saying “NBCNEWS hacked by The Script Kiddies.”

The attack is suspected to have taken by enticing a user to download an email that has an attachment of the malware, Trojan. The NBC news social media director, Osborn has confirmed that he recieved such an email during the time of the Hurricane Irene, prompting him to leave. After asking who had sent the email, Ryan Osborn mistakenly opened the attachment with the email.

Previously, Fox News Twitter Account suffered from the similar condition.
