On Friday, Tory MP, Bob Dechert, publically accepted and apologized for flirting with a Chinese journalist over internet. Dechert is Canada’s secretary for Foreign Affairs. He told the media that he is just a friend of Shi Rong, chief Toronto correspondent for Xinhua, the official Chinese government news agency that is directly responsible to the governing Communist party. However, he owned up all the flirtatious emails sent to Rong through his email address.
Mr. Dechert officially tried to explain the emails and his relationship with Shi. He says: “The person is a journalist whom I have come to know as a friend. I met her while doing Chinese-language media communications… These e-mails are flirtatious, but the friendship remained innocent and simply that – a friendship. I apologize for any harm caused to anyone by this situation.”
Last year in April, Dechert and Shi exchanged emails when the Tory MP also thanked Shi for sending him a photo of her from seven years earlier. It read: “You are so beautiful. I really like the picture of you by the water with your cheeks puffed. That look is so cute; I love it when you do that. Now, I miss you even more.”
