Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has vowed to win back support of Ontarians amid mounting allegations in ethics scandals, rising electricity prices and collapse of her approval ratings. In an emotional address to the audience at Liberal party’s annual general meeting in Ottawa on Saturday, Ms. Wynne confessed that “polling numbers and the pundits” are saying “many people in Ontario are not happy with me right now” and “people look at me and many of them think: ‘She’s not who we thought she was. She’s become a typical politician. She’ll do anything to win.’”

Ms. Wynne alleged that “frankly, I think I sometimes have given them reason to think that.” Moreover, Ms. Wynne acknowledged that she failed to timely understand the impact of province’s high hydro rates and only tried to deal with the problem belatedly in September, with a hastily-announced eight per cent subsidy for residential electricity bills. The Premier announced that more relief will be coming, but refraining from revealing the specifics. She mentioned that “our government made a mistake. It was my mistake. And I’m going to do my best to fix it,” adding that “in the weeks and the months ahead, we are going to find more ways to lower rates and reduce the burden on consumers.”

She conceded “I have some work to do to prove that I am who I have always been” and vowed to do a better job understanding voters’ concerns. Wynne promised that “I will do my very best to listen, to respond, to lead, and to serve you and the people of Ontario better,” adding that “I will be right there with you: As premier, as leader, I’ll be there with you as Kathleen, a proud mother and grandmother.”
