Budding NDP leadership hopeful Thomas Mulcair shows interest in running for the job. The Quebec MP says he’s “leaning toward” running for the position of late Jack Layton. It is almost as if Mulcair has made up his mind.

Earlier this week, he said he might not run because of the lack of party members in Quebec puts him at a disadvantage in the race. Since then, even his backers doubt he will jump into the race.

On Thursday, Mulcair said: “It’s a simple process of assessing what the chances are. People have often said I like a good fight, which is true. But I wouldn’t like to fight with one arm tied behind my back. So I am going to try and find out exactly how much support we can get. It’s leaning toward doing that (running) right now, but the process isn’t over.”

He added: “I might well wind up giving it a shot despite the odds you just described. I have not yet decided whether I am going to run. I will make that announcement in the coming weeks.”
