Brian Topp is officially running to replace the late Jack Layton NDP’s new leader, but is not sure if he will try to fill his downtown Toronto seat.

Topp says, “There will be a decision to make there and I haven’t made it today. We’ll just have to see what happens with the timing of that riding (by-election) and whether it works with the timing of the leadership race.”

He also said that timing is an issue in his decision, but he will definitely run for Parliament regardless of who becomes the new NDP leader.

He said: “I launched in the first week of a seven-month race for leader of the New Democratic Party. I have to focus on that and there will be a decision to make about Toronto-Danforth at the appropriate time, depending on the timing of that riding. But I did make a commitment, whatever the outcome of this race that I was going to stand for Parliament and I will keep that commitment.”

On Friday, Topp called a press conference to declare that he has the back of two more NDP caucus’ members: New Brunswick MP and labour critic Yvon Godin (Acadie-Bathurst) and Quebec MP Alain Giguère (Marc-Aurèle-Fortin), the critic for pensions.
