Investigators with the HRP/RCMP Integrated Major Crime Unit are investigating a report of a sexual assault that occurred early yesterday morning.

Shortly after midnight, a 25-year-old woman got into a cab on Grafton Street between Carmichael and Prince Streets. During the ride she fell asleep and when she woke up, she realized the driver was touching her inappropriately. She was not injured and was able to get out of the vehicle which is described as a green mini-van. She flagged over another taxi and that driver helped her by taking her to meet a friend.

Taxi drivers provide a valuable service to our community. It is important to note that the majority of taxi drivers take pride in providing a safe and accessible method of transportation to citizens in HRM. However, as with any service industry, potential for abuse of customers exists. When taking a cab, citizens should observe the following safety tips:
• Make note of the company name and number on the taxi roof light
• Look for a taxi meter and check for the taxi driver’s license and taxi owner’s license which should be clearly displayed inside the vehicle.
• Sit in the back of the vehicle if possible. This provides additional safety for passengers and drivers.
