District 10 RCMP are investigating a fatal single-vehicle collision that occurred on the Cyr Road in Baker Brook, N.B. on October 15, 2011. The initial investigation indicates that the collision occurred as the result of two vehicles racing each other in a residential area. One of the vehicles lost control and left the road, colliding with a tree in front of a home. High speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash.

One of the occupants of the vehicle, 17-year-old Jean-Yves Cyr of Baker Brook died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision. The driver of the vehicle, also a 17-year-old boy from Baker Brook, was seriously injured, and was airlifted by helicopter to the Moncton City Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. A third occupant, an 18-year-old Verret boy, also sustained minor injuries in the crash. None of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist was called to the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.
