A Canadian-American couple held hostage in Afghanistan by Taliban since 2012 can be seen in a newly released video that demands their freedom. The video released on Monday by the Haqqani network, a Taliban-linked group, shows the couple, Joshua Boyle and Caitlan Coleman, with their two sons, who were born in captivity, as they say they’re living a “Kafkaesque nightmare.” The couple pleaded their family’s release and asked U.S. President Barack Obama to think about his “legacy.”
33-year-old Boyle, who is Canadian, and his 31-year-old American wife, Coleman, were both kidnapped near Kabul, Afghanistan, during a backpacking trip through Central Asia. According to Coleman, the video was shot on Dec. 3. She can be seen bluntly criticizing her kidnappers and the governments that have failed to free her family. She says that “we understand both sides hate us,” adding that they “are content to leave us and our two surviving children in these problems.” However, she stressed that “we can only ask and pray that somebody will recognize the atrocities these men carry out against us as so-called retaliation, in their ingratitude and hypocrisy. My children have seen their mother defiled.”
The video showed two sons of the couple. The mention of “surviving children” in the video indicates that Coleman miscarried at some point during their four years in captivity or there was a third baby who died. At the time of her kidnaping, Coleman was five months pregnant so she gave birth in custody. A second boy followed in 2015.
