Student of the University of British Columbia, Rumana Monzur, who lost her sight in a brutal attack in Bangladesh in June, says news of her late husband’s demise have shaken her.

“I don’t have much information to comment on the situation but it was shocking news to me,” Ms. Monzur said in an e-mail.

“The last six months have been very difficult for me and this news has not made my situation any easier. My focus continues to be on my recovery and taking care of my daughter and my family. I won’t be speaking publicly on this development because I am not comfortable given the lack of information.”

On Monday, Bangladeshi news agencies confirmed the death of Hasan Sayeed Sumon. A postmortem was carried out – results will be ready within a week. His alleged cause of death is cardiac arrest.

Monzur is on sick leaves from UBC. She came back to Vancouver in July, expecting that professionals here could bring back her vision, but the injuries seemed too brutal to be repaired.

UBC arranged a fundraising movement to finance Ms. Monzur’s living and medical expenses and Ms. Monzur has said she hopes to finish her studies.
